Channel Islands and Isle of Man Banknotes: Jersey, Guernsey and Manx Notes

The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man each issue their own banknotes rather than using Bank of England notes directly, even though all three currencies are worth exactly the same as the pound sterling. Jersey's own notes date back to the Second World War: a coin shortage during the German occupation led to the Currency Notes (Jersey) Law of 1941, and artist Edmund Blampied designed a set of notes issued between 1942 and 1945. Guernsey has a similar wartime story, issuing unusual denominations such as one shilling and threepence during the occupation, before halting note issue after liberation in 1945 and only resuming regular issues in 1963. The Isle of Man has the longest history of the three: its first banknotes appeared in 1865, issued by commercial banks such as the Isle of Man Banking Company, until the government took over all note issue in 1961. Notes from all three islands, across different periods and issuers, appear in this collection.

FAQs

Which islands are included in this collection?

This collection covers banknotes from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Each island issues its own notes with different designs and issuing authorities, so listings show exactly which island, denomination and series a note is from.

Are Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man notes the same as Bank of England notes?

No, each island issues its own banknotes rather than using Bank of England notes, even though all three currencies are worth exactly the same as sterling and exchange at the same rate. They're collected as their own area because designs, issuing authorities and series differ from island to island.

Do you stock wartime Jersey or Guernsey occupation-era notes?

We can do, depending on stock. Jersey introduced its own notes in 1941 during the German occupation, designed by artist Edmund Blampied, and Guernsey issued its own unusual wartime denominations during the same period. These notes are collected for their history as much as their design.

How much is an old Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey note worth?

Value depends on the specific note, its condition, rarity and demand from collectors, rather than a general rule for the island or period. Two notes of the same face value can differ significantly in price if one is scarcer or in better condition. It's worth checking the exact note against similar sold examples rather than judging by face value alone.

Do you sell circulated and uncirculated notes?

Yes, we stock both circulated and uncirculated notes when available. Circulated notes have been used and may show folds, light wear, or softer corners, while uncirculated notes are typically crisper with sharper detail and fewer handling marks. Condition is shown on each listing so you can choose what suits your collecting style and budget.

What denominations do you stock?

Availability varies by island and issuer, but denominations across Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man notes range from small fractions of a pound up to higher values. Each listing clearly shows the denomination so you can browse by value.

What affects the value of these banknotes?

Value is usually influenced by condition, rarity and collector demand for the specific island, issuer and series. Notes that are scarcer, in higher grade, or from a notable period, such as wartime issues, tend to command more interest. It's worth checking the exact note against similar sold examples rather than judging by island or face value alone.

Are your banknotes authentic?

Yes, we only sell genuine banknotes and we check items before listing. Each product listing includes photos and a description of the exact item so you can review the issuing authority, denomination, date and condition before you buy. If you have a question about a particular note, message us and we will do our best to help.
