Sheffield has been synonymous with cutlery making since the medieval period, and by the 19th and early 20th centuries its factories were producing carving sets, flatware and blades for markets around the world. Many carving sets from this era carry the Firth Brearley or Firth Stainless mark, named after Harry Brearley, who discovered stainless steel's rust-resistant properties in Sheffield in 1913, and Thomas Firth & Sons, the firm he joined the following year to bring it into commercial production. Handles were often made from bone, antler, horn or mother of pearl rather than the plainer materials used later, giving each set its own character. Sheffield is the best-known centre for British cutlery, but stock has also included other makers, such as Birmingham, so check each listing for its specific maker, hallmark and condition.
