Vintage and antique art for sale: paintings, drawings and prints
FAQs
Is the art you sell original, or reproduction?
Is the art you sell original, or reproduction?
The paintings and drawings are original hand-made works, one of a kind. Prints are a different thing: a print is an image taken from a plate or a block, so more than one impression exists, and we say clearly in each listing which sort of piece you are looking at.
How old is vintage and antique art?
How old is vintage and antique art?
As a rough rule, antique means around a hundred years old or more, and vintage covers work from the last century that is not old enough to be antique. We give a date in the listing where one is written on the piece or where the artist's dates make it clear.
Do the pieces come framed?
Do the pieces come framed?
Most do, and the frame is shown in the photographs so you can see its condition as well as the picture's. Frames vary from original period mouldings to later replacements, and where we know which it is we say so.
What if the artist is unknown or the signature is unclear?
What if the artist is unknown or the signature is unclear?
That is common with older work. We photograph the signature close up and give what we can read, and where we cannot identify an artist with confidence we say so rather than guessing. A piece with no attribution is priced on its quality and condition.
What condition should I expect?
What condition should I expect?
Older art has usually been on a wall for decades. Varnish on oils darkens over time, paper can carry small marks, and frames pick up knocks at the corners. We photograph each piece closely and note anything the photographs do not make obvious.
Can you tell me the measurements before I buy?
Can you tell me the measurements before I buy?
Sizes are given in the listing, and where a piece is framed that measurement normally includes the frame. If you need the size of the image on its own, or a measurement from a particular angle, message us and we will check it.
Should I have an old painting cleaned?
Should I have an old painting cleaned?
If you want it done, have it done properly by a conservator. Old varnish yellows, and taking it back can change a painting dramatically, but home cleaning with household products lifts paint as well as dirt and cannot be undone.
How is framed art packed and posted?
How is framed art packed and posted?
Framed pieces are wrapped and packed to protect the glass and the corners, and postage is worked out by size and weight rather than a flat rate. Postage is combined across everything you order at the same time.
Do you ship art outside the UK?
Do you ship art outside the UK?
Yes, we ship worldwide, though larger framed pieces cost more to send. UK delivery is free on orders over £50, and international costs are calculated at checkout from the destination and the parcel size.
