Art prints for sale: engravings, etchings and lithographs

A print is an image made from a prepared surface. An engraver cut the lines into a copper plate, an etcher bit them in with acid, a lithographer drew on stone, and the inked surface was then pressed onto paper, over and over.

This is how ordinary people got pictures before photography. A painting went to one house, but a print run went to hundreds, and for most of the nineteenth century the print on the parlour wall was how a family owned a view of the Highlands or a portrait of somebody they admired. It also means prints are the affordable end of old art, and a good one framed properly holds its own next to a painting.

A fair number of antique prints started life inside books. Illustrated volumes and atlases were broken up when they fell apart, and the plates were sold separately, which is why an old print sometimes has a fold down the middle or text on the reverse.

Telling a period print from a modern copy is not difficult once you know what to look at. An engraving or etching usually has a plate mark, the shallow indentation where the edge of the metal plate pressed into damp paper, and the lines are solid to the eye. A modern photographic reproduction has no plate mark and breaks into a regular pattern of dots under magnification.

Prints come in as we find them, so it is worth checking back.

FAQs

What is a plate mark?

It is the faint rectangular indentation pressed into the paper by the edge of the metal plate. You can usually feel it with a fingertip as well as see it, and its presence is one of the quickest ways to tell a genuine engraving or etching from a later photographic copy.

What is the difference between an engraving, an etching and a lithograph?

It comes down to how the image was put onto the printing surface. An engraving is cut into metal with a tool, an etching is bitten into metal with acid, and a lithograph is drawn onto stone and printed using the fact that grease and water repel each other. Engravings and etchings tend to look crisp and linear, lithographs softer and more like a drawing.

Are antique prints valuable?

Most are affordable, which is a large part of their appeal. Value depends on the subject, the size, how early the impression is and the condition of the paper, and the prints that fetch serious money tend to be maps, natural history plates and work by known printmakers.

Why do some prints have text or a fold on the back?

Those prints came out of a book. Illustrated books and atlases that had fallen apart were often broken up and the plates sold individually, which leaves a centre fold or printed text on the reverse. It does not affect how the image looks framed.

How can I tell a real antique print from a modern reproduction?

Use a magnifier. A period print shows solid lines, dots or a grain that came from the plate or stone, and often a plate mark at the edge. A modern reproduction resolves into an even grid of coloured dots and sits flat on bright white paper that feels newer than the image looks.

What condition should I expect from old paper?

Some toning of the paper is normal, and spots, light creasing or trimmed margins turn up regularly on prints of this age. We photograph each one closely and mention anything that does not show clearly in the pictures.

Do the prints come framed?

It varies. Some arrive framed and ready to hang and others are unframed, which makes them cheaper to post and lets you choose a mount and frame yourself. Each listing says which, and gives the size.

How are prints packed for posting?

Unframed prints go flat between boards in a rigid envelope so they cannot bend, and framed ones are wrapped with the glass and corners protected. Postage is combined across everything you order at the same time.

Do you post prints worldwide?

Yes. UK delivery is free on orders over £50, and international postage is worked out at checkout from the destination and the size of the parcel.
