Florins (Two Shillings): a classic British pre-decimal coin

Florins are British two-shilling coins, often called the “two bob bit”, issued from 1849 to 1967 and featuring monarchs from Victoria through to Elizabeth II. Many earlier florins were struck in silver, with sterling silver issues from 1849–1919 and 50% silver issues from 1920–1946, before moving to cupronickel from 1947 onwards. When choosing a florin, date, condition and overall eye appeal tend to have the biggest impact on desirability and price.

FAQs

What is a British florin (two shillings) coin?

A florin is a pre-decimal British coin worth two shillings, often nicknamed the “two bob bit”. It was issued across multiple monarchs and is a popular type for collectors because there are lots of dates, designs and conditions to choose from.

Which monarchs appear on British florins?

Florins were issued with portraits of several British monarchs, including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Availability varies depending on what we have in stock at the time.

Are florins silver?

Many florins were minted in silver, but it depends on the year. In general, florins were struck in sterling silver (92.5%) from 1849 to 1919, then in a lower silver content alloy (50% silver) from 1920 to 1946. From 1947 onwards, florins were minted in cupronickel (no silver). We list the date and key details on each product page so you can confirm the exact type before buying.

What affects the price of a florin coin?

Price is mainly influenced by the coin’s metal composition (for example, whether it is a silver issue), the date, condition, and how scarce a particular issue is. Two coins from the same year can be priced very differently if one has less wear, fewer marks, or better overall eye appeal.
