Other militaria for sale: sweetheart brooches, insignia and mixed lots

Militaria covers a lot of ground, and this is where the pieces sit that do not belong under badges, buttons, medals or postcards.

It is also the most personal end of it. A brooch sent home from a ship, a badge worn on a lapel for fifty years after the war ended: these are things that were kept because they meant something to somebody, not because they were worth anything, and that is usually what people are buying here.

Sweetheart brooches are the clearest example. A serviceman would send one home to a wife, mother or girlfriend, usually carrying his regimental badge or the name of his ship, and they were made in everything from silver and enamel down to cheap white metal. They sold in huge numbers in both wars, and the ones that have survived were generally kept in a jewellery box rather than a collection.

Enamel lapel badges appear here too: association and ex-service badges, home front and civil defence badges, long service awards, all small things people wore day to day.

Mixed lots come through as well, usually a tin or a box out of a house clearance with a bit of everything in it. They are worth a look if you are starting out, as they tend to work out cheaper per item than buying pieces one at a time.

What sits in this part of our militaria changes more than any other, so it is worth a look each time you visit.

FAQs

What sort of items are in this collection?

The militaria that does not fit our other categories: sweetheart brooches, enamel and lapel badges, insignia and patches, small pieces of military ephemera, and mixed lots that contain a bit of everything.

What is a sweetheart brooch?

A small brooch given by a serviceman to a wife, mother or girlfriend while he was away, normally carrying his regimental badge or the name of his ship. They were made in large numbers in both world wars, in materials ranging from silver and enamel to plain white metal.

Are these pieces original?

Yes, everything listed is a genuine period item. Where we are not certain of a date or an exact regiment, we say so in the listing rather than guessing.

What condition are these items in?

Mixed, as you would expect from things that have been worn and kept for decades. Enamel can be chipped and pins can be replaced. Every item is photographed close up so you can judge it before buying, and anything that does not show clearly is noted.

What is in a mixed militaria lot?

It varies from lot to lot, which is part of the appeal. The photographs show everything included, and the listing lists what we have been able to identify.

Do you sell weapons or deactivated firearms?

No. We deal in badges, buttons, medals, insignia, postcards and similar collectables, not weapons, ammunition or anything deactivated.

Where should I start if I am new to collecting militaria?

Most people start with one thread and follow it: a regiment a relative served in, a ship, or a single type of item such as cap badges. A mixed lot is a cheap way to handle a few different things and work out what interests you.

Do you buy militaria as well as sell it?

Yes, we buy single items and whole collections. Get in touch through our contact page if you have something you are thinking of selling.

How is everything packed, and do you post overseas?

Small items are wrapped and padded so nothing moves in the post, and paper items go in a sleeve and a hardback envelope. We combine postage across your order and ship worldwide, with free UK delivery over £50 and international rates shown at checkout.
