The History Behind Our Irish Postcards

Ireland's postcards take in centuries of history across the whole island, from old monasteries and medieval castles to dramatic coastlines and lively cities, reflecting a place shaped as much by its landscape as by its long and colourful past.

Blarney Castle in County Cork is the standout subject in this collection. The current tower house was built around 1446 by Cormac MacCarthy, King of Munster, replacing an earlier stone fort on the site from around 1200. It's best known for the Blarney Stone, set into the castle battlements, which legend says grants the gift of eloquence to anyone who kisses it. One popular version of the story links the stone to Robert the Bruce, said to have given a piece of it to Cormac MacCarthy in gratitude for Irish support at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Postcards of the Giant's Causeway, on the County Antrim coast, are another regular feature. Around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed there roughly 50 to 60 million years ago, when volcanic activity cooled and cracked into the hexagonal shapes seen today. The site was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, and Irish legend attributes the columns to the giant Finn McCool, said to have built a path across the sea to face the Scottish giant Benandonner.

Postcards from other Irish towns and cities, including Dublin, Killarney, Galway and Belfast, appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

What's the story behind the Blarney Stone?

According to legend, kissing the Blarney Stone grants the gift of eloquence. Its exact origin is disputed, but the most commonly told story is that Robert the Bruce gave a portion of stone to Cormac MacCarthy, King of Munster, in 1314 in gratitude for Irish support at the Battle of Bannockburn.

How did the Giant's Causeway form?

The Giant's Causeway is made up of around 40,000 basalt columns, formed roughly 50 to 60 million years ago when volcanic lava cooled and contracted into distinctive hexagonal shapes. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Do your Irish postcards cover towns beyond Blarney and the Giant's Causeway?

Yes, postcards from other Irish towns and cities such as Dublin, Killarney, Galway and Belfast appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What period are these Irish postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

How can I date an old Irish postcard?

A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

What condition are the postcards in?

We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing, corner wear, or toning, and condition can vary from postcard to postcard.

Are these postcards suitable for framing?

Many customers do frame their postcards. Standard postcard size fits easily into small picture frames, and a number of our customers group several together for a display.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
