FAQs
What is foxing?
What is foxing?
Foxing is the scattering of small rust-brown spots that appears on old paper, usually the result of damp and age. It is very common on works on paper of this age, it does not spread once the paper is kept dry, and where a piece has it we photograph it.
Are these original paintings?
Are these original paintings?
Yes, each is painted by hand on paper, so there is only one of it. Under close inspection you can see the washes overlapping and the texture of the paper coming through, which a printed copy does not show.
Why do watercolours fade?
Why do watercolours fade?
Watercolour pigment sits in a thin layer on paper with nothing to shield it, so daylight breaks it down over the years. It is why a watercolour hung opposite a window looks paler than the same painting kept in a drawer, and the change cannot be reversed.
Where is the best place to hang a watercolour?
Where is the best place to hang a watercolour?
On a wall that does not get direct sun, away from bathrooms, kitchens and anywhere that gets steamy. Behind glass with a mount keeping the paper off the glazing is ideal, and that is how most of ours are already framed.
Are the artists well known?
Are the artists well known?
Some are listed artists with recorded exhibition histories and some are talented amateurs whose names went no further than their own town. Where a piece is signed we photograph the signature and give what we can read of it, and we say plainly when we cannot identify someone.
Do they come mounted and framed?
Do they come mounted and framed?
Most are framed behind glass, which is how watercolours need to be kept. Frames and mounts range from period originals to later reframing, and both the frame and the picture are shown in the listing photographs.
How can I tell a watercolour from a print of one?
How can I tell a watercolour from a print of one?
Look at the edges of the colour. A painted wash has soft, uneven edges and the paper texture shows through, while a printed reproduction breaks down into a regular pattern of dots under magnification and has an unnaturally even surface.
