FAQs
What is craquelure?
What is craquelure?
It is the fine network of hairline cracks that forms in oil paint as it ages and the layers move against each other. It is normal in an older painting and is one of the signs that a picture is genuinely old rather than recently painted to look it.
Are these paintings originals rather than prints?
Are these paintings originals rather than prints?
Yes, everything in this collection is hand-painted, so no two are alike. If you look closely at the photographs you can see the brush marks and the texture of the paint, which a printed reproduction does not have.
What are the paintings painted on?
What are the paintings painted on?
Usually canvas stretched over a wooden frame, or board, which was cheaper and was often used for smaller works and for painting outdoors. Older pieces are sometimes on a wooden panel. The listing says which where it can be seen.
Why do old oil paintings look darker or yellower?
Why do old oil paintings look darker or yellower?
It is normally the varnish rather than the paint. Varnish was applied to protect the surface and it yellows steadily over the years, which warms everything underneath it. A conservator can remove and replace it, and the difference can be startling.
Do the paintings come with their original frames?
Do the paintings come with their original frames?
Some are in what looks like their original frame and others have been reframed at some point, which is very common. Frames are photographed along with the painting so you can judge the condition of both.
What if the painting is not signed?
What if the painting is not signed?
Unsigned paintings are common and are priced on how well they are painted and what condition they are in. Where there is a signature or an inscription on the back we photograph it and give what we can read of it.
Where should I hang an old oil painting?
Where should I hang an old oil painting?
Away from direct sunlight, radiators and steamy rooms. Oils cope better than works on paper, but strong light will still fade pigments over years, and big swings in heat and damp are what make old paint lift.
