The History Behind Our Inverness-shire Postcards

Culloden Battlefield, just outside Inverness, is one of the most significant sites in this collection. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was defeated there by the Duke of Cumberland's government forces in under an hour, in what's recognised as the last pitched battle fought on British soil. The defeat brought the Jacobite cause to an end, and postcards of the battlefield and its memorial cairn remain a popular Highland subject.

Loch Ness is another landmark that dominates this collection, along with the ruins of Urquhart Castle on its banks. The castle site has been fortified since at least the 6th century, with most of today's ruins dating from the 13th century, when Robert the Bruce took control of it in 1306. Loch Ness's monster legend stretches back just as far, first recorded in a 6th-century account by St Columba, though the modern Nessie craze took off after a widely publicised, and later discredited, photograph in 1934.
