Medals for Sale: Jacobite Rebellion and Royal Coronation Medals

Medals have been struck for centuries to mark everything from military victories to royal ceremonies and academic achievement.

Some of our medals relate to the Jacobite rising of 1745 and 1746, when Charles Edward Stuart tried to reclaim the British throne for his family. Most of these medals mark the Duke of Cumberland's victory over the rebellion at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, rather than being struck by the Jacobites themselves.

Royal coronation medals have been struck for the crowning of every British monarch since the 16th century, and giving out silver medals at the ceremony itself became a tradition in the early 1600s. Not every coronation actually took place: Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936, before his coronation could be held the following year, but several manufacturers had already produced medals in anticipation of the event, and those medals still exist today.
