London Postcards: The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

London postcards for sale capture a city built on nearly two thousand years of history. The Tower of London, begun around 1078 by William the Conqueror using stone shipped from Caen in France, has served as a royal fortress, prison and treasury, and remains one of the most photographed buildings in the country. Tower Bridge, opened in 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales, was built to ease congestion for the growing population east of London Bridge, its twin towers designed to lift and let tall ships pass beneath.

Postcards of St Paul's Cathedral are another London staple, showing Christopher Wren's dome, completed in 1710 after 35 years of building work. Elizabeth Tower, home to the bell known as Big Ben, was finished in 1859 as part of the new Palace of Westminster following the fire that destroyed the old one in 1834. Marble Arch, designed by John Nash and built between 1827 and 1833 as a grand gateway for Buckingham Palace, was moved to its current spot at Hyde Park's northeast corner in 1851, and appears often in postcards of Oxford Street and Park Lane.

Postcards from other parts of London appear too, from Buckingham Palace, Westminster, Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden to the streets, parks and river views that made the capital one of the most postcarded cities in the world during the early 20th century.

FAQs

How old is the Tower of London?

William the Conqueror began the White Tower around 1078, using stone shipped from Caen in France, making the Tower of London close to a thousand years old.

When did Tower Bridge open?

Tower Bridge opened on 30 June 1894, officially by the Prince and Princess of Wales, and its bascule towers were designed to lift and let river traffic through.

How can I date an old London postcard?

A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

What condition are the postcards in?

We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing or corner wear, and condition varies from postcard to postcard.

Are the postcards used or unused?

You'll find a mix throughout this collection. Each listing shows whether that particular postcard has been posted or not.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.

Do your London postcards cover more than just the famous landmarks?

Yes, alongside well-known sights like the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, postcards cover a wide spread of London streets, parks and buildings from across the decades.

Are London postcards popular with collectors outside the UK?

Yes, London is one of the most collected postcard subjects worldwide, and we ship these postcards internationally as well as across the UK.
