The History Behind Our Middlesex Postcards

Middlesex was one of the smallest historic counties of England, and for most people today it survives only in names and postcodes rather than on the map. Under the London Government Act 1963, the vast majority of Middlesex was absorbed into the newly created Greater London in 1965, with small outlying areas passing to Hertfordshire and Surrey instead. Towns that once had their own Middlesex identity, including Harrow, Enfield, Ealing, Uxbridge and Twickenham, are now thought of simply as parts of London.

Even without a county council of its own, Middlesex left plenty for postcard collectors to look out for. Harrow is home to Harrow School, founded in 1572 and still instantly recognisable on old postcards of Harrow-on-the-Hill. Twickenham has been synonymous with English rugby since Twickenham Stadium opened in 1909, while Enfield's Royal Small Arms Factory lent its name to the famous Lee-Enfield rifle. Even Hampton Court Palace, built for Cardinal Wolsey and later a favourite of Henry VIII, stands on the Middlesex bank of the Thames rather than in Surrey, as many people assume.

Postcards from Feltham, Southall, Hounslow and other Middlesex towns appear here too, and this page grows as new stock comes in.

FAQs

What area did the historic county of Middlesex cover?

Middlesex covered most of what's now inner and outer north-west London, taking in towns such as Harrow, Enfield, Ealing, Uxbridge and Twickenham, right up until most of the county became part of Greater London in 1965.

What's the story behind Harrow School appearing on Middlesex postcards?

Harrow School was founded in 1572, and Harrow-on-the-Hill's distinctive skyline has made it a popular postcard subject for well over a century, appearing on cards from Edwardian times through to the mid-20th century.

Is every postcard an original, or are some reproductions?

Every postcard we sell is a genuine original from its era, never a modern reprint, and our photos always show the exact postcard you'll receive.

Do you have postcard collections for counties near Middlesex?

Yes, we also have a dedicated Hertfordshire postcards collection, along with other English counties, so you can browse further afield across the Home Counties.

How do I search for a postcard from a particular Middlesex town?

Use the search and filter tools on this page to look for a place name or subject, and check back regularly as we add new Middlesex stock.

Why does Twickenham feature in the Middlesex collection?

Twickenham has been linked with English rugby since Twickenham Stadium opened in 1909, and its postcards capture both the stadium and the town's riverside character on the Thames.

I thought Hampton Court Palace was in Surrey, is that a mistake?

It's a common assumption, but Hampton Court Palace actually stands on the Middlesex bank of the Thames, not the Surrey side, so postcards of the palace are listed here under Middlesex.

What condition are the Middlesex postcards in?

We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing or corner toning, and condition varies from postcard to postcard.

Do you combine postage across your Middlesex and other postcard collections?

Yes, we combine postage across the whole store. We ship worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.
