Wales is a country of castles, mountains and a language and culture all its own, and this collection reflects that range, from fortified towns in the north to the industrial valleys of the south and the long Pembrokeshire coastline.
Caernarfon Castle is the standout subject in this collection, built by Edward I between 1283 and 1289 as part of his campaign to control north Wales. His son, later Edward II, was born within its walls in 1284, and the castle has since become linked with the investiture of the Prince of Wales, most famously in 1911 and again in 1969 when Charles was invested there.
Postcards of Snowdon, known in Welsh as Yr Wyddfa, are another regular feature. At 1,085 metres it is the highest peak in Wales, sitting within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Welsh legend holds that the summit is the burial place of the giant Rhita Gawr, and since 1896 visitors have been able to reach the top by the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
