Welsh Postcards: Caernarfon Castle and Snowdonia

Wales is a country of castles, mountains and a language and culture all its own, and this collection reflects that range, from fortified towns in the north to the industrial valleys of the south and the long Pembrokeshire coastline.

Caernarfon Castle is the standout subject in this collection, built by Edward I between 1283 and 1289 as part of his campaign to control north Wales. His son, later Edward II, was born within its walls in 1284, and the castle has since become linked with the investiture of the Prince of Wales, most famously in 1911 and again in 1969 when Charles was invested there.

Postcards of Snowdon, known in Welsh as Yr Wyddfa, are another regular feature. At 1,085 metres it is the highest peak in Wales, sitting within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Welsh legend holds that the summit is the burial place of the giant Rhita Gawr, and since 1896 visitors have been able to reach the top by the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

Postcards from other Welsh towns, including Cardiff, Conwy, Tenby and across Pembrokeshire, appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

Why is Caernarfon Castle historically significant?

Caernarfon Castle was built by Edward I between 1283 and 1289 to secure his control of north Wales. His son was born there in 1284, and since 1911 the castle has hosted the investiture of the Prince of Wales, including Charles's investiture in 1969.

Is Snowdon the same place as Yr Wyddfa?

Yes, Yr Wyddfa is the Welsh name for Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres. Eryri National Park voted to use the Welsh name as the primary one in 2022, though both names are still widely used.

Do your Welsh postcards cover towns beyond Caernarfon and Snowdonia?

Yes, postcards from other Welsh towns such as Cardiff, Conwy, Tenby and Pembrokeshire appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What period are these Welsh postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Are these real photographic postcards or printed ones?

We stock both. Real photographic postcards (often abbreviated RPPC) were printed directly from a negative onto photographic paper, giving a sharper image, while printed postcards were produced using traditional lithographic methods. We note which type each postcard is in its listing.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Would a vintage postcard make a good gift?

They make a thoughtful gift for anyone with a connection to Wales, or for collectors interested in social history, architecture or travel memorabilia.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
