Edinburgh Castle sits at the heart of this collection, built on the plug of an extinct volcano that has been fortified for around 1,100 years, with evidence of human occupation on the rock stretching back to roughly 850 BC. It's one of the oldest fortified sites in Europe, and postcards of the castle looming over the city appear throughout this collection.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is another Lothian landmark that recurs often. Founded as an Augustinian abbey by King David I in 1128, it grew into a royal residence after James IV built a palace beside it in 1501, and it remains the monarch's official residence in Scotland today.
