Lanarkshire Postcards: From Glasgow Cathedral to New Lanark

Glasgow Cathedral is one of the most striking subjects in this collection. Built mainly between the 13th and 15th centuries, it's the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to survive the Reformation of 1560 largely intact, reportedly protected by the city's trades guilds when other cathedrals across the country were stripped or destroyed. Postcards of the cathedral and the surrounding Glasgow streets appear often throughout this collection.

New Lanark is another landmark that recurs regularly. Founded as a cotton mill village in 1768, it became one of the largest factory sites in the world under the social reformer Robert Owen, who introduced progressive education and humane working conditions decades ahead of the rest of industrial Britain. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and postcards of its mill buildings and the Falls of Clyde nearby are popular with collectors.

Postcards from Hamilton, Motherwell, Lanark and other Lanarkshire towns appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

Why did Glasgow Cathedral survive the Reformation when others didn't?

Glasgow Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to survive the Reformation of 1560 largely intact. Tradition holds that the city's trades guilds took up arms to defend it from the damage inflicted on other Scottish cathedrals.

What made New Lanark so unusual for its time?

Under Robert Owen's management, New Lanark introduced progressive education, better housing and more humane working conditions for its mill workers, decades before such reforms were common elsewhere in industrial Britain. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What period are these Lanarkshire postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Do your Lanarkshire postcards cover towns beyond Glasgow and New Lanark?

Yes, postcards from Hamilton, Motherwell, Lanark and other Lanarkshire towns appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What condition are the postcards in?

We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing, corner wear, or toning, and condition can vary from postcard to postcard.

How can I date an old Lanarkshire postcard?

A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
