Lancashire postcards: Blackpool, Manchester and seaside town views

Blackpool is by far the most photographed town in this collection, and it's easy to see why. Postcard publishers churned out huge numbers of views of the Tower, the three piers, the Winter Gardens and the Pleasure Beach right through the 20th century, so you'll find postcards spanning from Edwardian seafront scenes to 1960s snapshots of visitors enjoying a day out.

Manchester turns up a lot too, which makes sense once you know the city sat within the historic county of Lancashire until boundary changes in 1974 moved it into Greater Manchester. The same applies to Liverpool and Southport, both shown here in postcards of the Town Hall, John Rylands Library and Lord Street. We've kept these under the Lancashire heading because that's where they were published and sold at the time, and it's how collectors usually search for them.

Beyond the big cities, you'll find postcards from smaller Lancashire towns such as Blackburn, Bolton, Nelson and Fleetwood, along with the Fylde coast resorts of Lytham and St Annes-on-Sea. New stock is added regularly, so if a particular town or landmark isn't here today, it's worth checking back.

FAQs

Why are there so many Blackpool postcards in this collection?

Blackpool was one of the most popular seaside resorts in the country for most of the 20th century, and postcard publishers produced enormous quantities of views to sell to holidaymakers. That popularity is reflected in what survives today, so you'll see the Tower, the piers and the Pleasure Beach photographed from dozens of angles and across several decades.

Why do some of your Lancashire postcards show Manchester or Liverpool?

Manchester and Liverpool both sat within the historic county of Lancashire until local government boundary changes in 1974 moved them into Greater Manchester and Merseyside. We list them here because that's how they were originally published and how most collectors expect to find them.

What is a multiview postcard?

A multiview postcard shows several different photographs or scenes on a single card, usually arranged around a title such as the town's name. You'll see a few of these in the Lancashire collection, covering places like St Annes-on-Sea.

Are these genuine old postcards, or modern reprints?

Every postcard in this collection is an original item from the time it was printed, not a reproduction. Many are unposted and never went through the mail, while others carry a postmark from being sent decades ago, but both are equally genuine vintage pieces.

Can I see the back of the postcard as well as the front?

Yes, every listing includes photos of both sides, so you can check for any postmark, message or stamp before you buy, as well as the picture side itself.

How can I tell how old a Lancashire postcard is?

If a postcard has been posted, it will have a postmark on the back, though how clearly you can read it varies. On some, the date and where it was posted from are easy to make out, while on others the ink has faded and it's harder to tell. For unposted cards, we look at things like the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to work out an approximate era.

I'm looking for a postcard of a specific Lancashire town. Do you add new stock?

We list new postcards regularly, so if the town or view you want isn't here today, it's worth checking back. You're also welcome to get in touch and we can check whether we've got it in our unlisted stock.

Do you offer free shipping on Lancashire postcards?

Yes, we offer free UK shipping on orders over £50, and this applies across the whole site, so it's worth having a look at our other collections, gifts and more while you're here. For orders under £50, postage is calculated at checkout based on weight, and we also ship internationally if you're outside the UK.

Would one of these postcards make a good gift?

Many customers buy a Lancashire postcard as a gift, particularly for someone with a connection to Blackpool, Manchester or one of the smaller towns in the collection. A postcard tied to a specific place or date can make a nice personal touch, whether that's a hometown, a family holiday spot or a special anniversary.
