Wigtownshire Postcards: From Whithorn to Stranraer

Whithorn is one of the most historically significant subjects in this collection. St Ninian established the first Christian mission north of Hadrian's Wall here in 397 AD, building a small stone church known as Candida Casa, or the White House. Regarded as the cradle of Scottish Christianity, the site predates the monastery on Iona by around 150 years and grew into a cathedral and place of pilgrimage for over 1,000 years.

Wigtown is another subject that recurs throughout this collection. In 1998, it was designated Scotland's National Book Town, chosen from a shortlist of struggling small towns as a way to regenerate the area using its many empty shopfronts. It's now home to numerous bookshops and an annual book festival, having grown from a town in decline into a literary destination.
