What's the Story Behind Our Sutherland Postcards?

Dunrobin Castle is the standout subject in this collection, seat of the Earls, and later Dukes, of Sutherland, with origins dating back to the early 1300s. Its fairy-tale exterior largely dates from a remodelling between 1835 and 1850, when the architect Sir Charles Barry drew on French chateau influences for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. A fire in 1915 caused extensive damage to the roof and interior, which was later restored by the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer.

Smoo Cave, near Durness, is another remarkable Sutherland subject. This natural sea cave, carved into limestone cliffs, has three chambers, including one reached only by boat and another where a waterfall pours in from a sinkhole above. Archaeological finds there span the Neolithic, Iron Age and Norse periods, and the cave was visited by Sir Walter Scott in 1814.

Postcards from Golspie, Lairg and Bettyhill appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

Who built Dunrobin Castle in its current form?

The current fairy-tale exterior largely dates from a remodelling between 1835 and 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who drew on French chateau influences for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, though the castle's origins go back to the early 1300s.

What can you see inside Smoo Cave?

Smoo Cave has three chambers, including one only reachable by boat and another with a waterfall pouring in from a sinkhole above. Archaeological finds there span the Neolithic, Iron Age and Norse periods.

Did Dunrobin Castle suffer any damage over the years?

Yes, a fire in 1915 caused extensive damage to the roof and much of the castle's interior, which was later restored by the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer.

Do your Sutherland postcards cover towns beyond Dunrobin and Smoo Cave?

Yes, postcards from Golspie, Lairg and Bettyhill appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What period are these Sutherland postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Are these real photographic postcards or printed ones?

We stock both. Real photographic postcards (often abbreviated RPPC) were printed directly from a negative onto photographic paper, giving a sharper image, while printed postcards were produced using traditional lithographic methods. We note which type each postcard is in its listing.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
