Hampshire postcards: cathedral views, coastal towns and the New Forest

Hampshire postcards capture a county that stretches from a medieval cathedral city to the Solent coast and the New Forest.

Winchester Cathedral is one of the most photographed subjects in Hampshire postcards, and it has the longest nave of any Gothic cathedral in Europe. Winchester itself was once the capital of Anglo-Saxon England, made so by King Alfred in 871. Aldershot postcards often picture the town's military Tattoo, an annual pageant dating back to 1894, held in the town that earned its reputation as the "Home of the British Army" after the garrison was established there in 1854.

Southsea postcards reflect its rise as a Victorian seaside resort, while Netley Abbey is a recurring subject, its Gothic ruins having drawn painters including John Constable and inspired Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Postcards of the New Forest, including Lyndhurst, show a quieter, rural side of the county, shaped by its founding as a royal hunting ground by William the Conqueror in 1079.

Postcards from Basingstoke, Andover, Romsey and other Hampshire towns and villages appear too, and it's worth checking back for new arrivals.

FAQs

What was the Aldershot Tattoo?
The Aldershot Tattoo was a large annual military pageant held in the town, long known as the home of the British Army. It drew huge crowds for its displays and became a popular subject for postcard publishers, which is why several appear in this collection.

What are topographical postcards?
Topographical postcards show real places, such as towns, villages, streets, buildings and landmarks. They're popular with local history collectors and with people building a collection around a particular place.

Are the postcards used or unused?
You'll find a mix. Some cards have been posted, so they carry a postmark, stamp or handwritten message, while others are unused with a blank back. Each listing shows which you're getting.

How can I date a Hampshire postcard?
A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. For unused cards, it can be harder to pin down an exact date, but the publisher, printing style and details in the image itself can help give a rough era.

What should I check before buying an old postcard?
Have a look at the corners and edges for wear, check the front for creases or marks, and look at the back for any writing, stamps or tears. Our listing photos show both sides so you can judge the condition yourself.

Do you have postcards from a specific Hampshire town, like Winchester or Lymington?
Often, though it depends on current stock. Use the search facility in the top left-hand corner to check for a particular town, village or landmark, and do check back another time if we don't have it today.

Would a Hampshire postcard make a good gift?
Yes, especially for someone with a connection to the county, whether that's Winchester, the New Forest or a childhood holiday on the south coast. Choosing a place that means something to them is usually the best starting point.

Do you have postcards of the New Forest villages?
Yes, alongside Lyndhurst and Rockford, New Forest villages appear throughout this collection, capturing a quieter, more rural side of Hampshire compared with the coastal and cathedral city views.

What's the history behind the Netley Abbey postcards?
Netley Abbey is a ruined medieval abbey near Southampton Water, and its atmospheric ruins were a favourite subject for Victorian and Edwardian postcard publishers, which is why it turns up in this collection.

Why is Bournemouth under Hampshire?
We sort our postcards by the old historical counties, the ones used before the boundary changes of 1974 and 1975. Most of our postcards date from well before then, so the county printed on them, or written by the sender, is usually the historical one. Bournemouth was in Hampshire, Birkenhead was in Cheshire and Arran was in Buteshire. If you can't find a place where you expect it, try our search.
