Berwickshire Postcards: From the Union Chain Bridge to Duns

The Union Chain Bridge is one of Berwickshire's most remarkable subjects for postcards. Designed by Captain Samuel Brown and opened in 1820, it was the first chain suspension bridge in Europe to carry wheeled traffic, and it remains the oldest bridge of its kind still in use anywhere in the world. It spans the River Tweed between Fishwick, on the Berwickshire side, and Horncliffe in Northumberland, and its design went on to influence engineers including Thomas Telford.

Coldstream is another Berwickshire town with a notable history. General George Monck raised his regiment in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1650 under Cromwell's Commonwealth, and his troops were based in Coldstream in late 1659 before marching to London the following year to help restore Charles II to the throne. The regiment became known as the Coldstream Guards after Monck's death in 1670, and it remains one of the oldest continuously serving regiments in the British Army.
