Why do you have so many postcards of Newark Castle?
Newark Castle has a dramatic history, from the death of King John in 1216 to three sieges during the English Civil War, and it's remained a popular subject for postcard photographers and publishers ever since. That popularity is reflected in how often it turns up in Nottinghamshire postcard collections, including ours.
What's the connection between Nottingham Castle and the English Civil War?
It was just outside Nottingham Castle, on what's now called Standard Hill, that Charles I raised his royal standard in August 1642, an act seen as the formal start of the Civil War. The castle itself stayed under Parliamentarian control for the rest of the conflict.
What is the Dukeries, and why does it appear in this collection?
The Dukeries is an area of north Nottinghamshire once home to four grand ducal estates, Clumber Park, Welbeck Abbey, Thoresby Hall and Worksop Manor, all set within the old bounds of Sherwood Forest. Postcards of the parkland and houses were popular souvenirs for visitors from the Victorian era onwards.
How would you describe the condition of your Nottinghamshire postcards?
Every listing includes photos of both sides of the postcard, so you can see its condition for yourself. Where there's a specific issue that isn't obvious from the photos, such as a tear or thinning, we'll mention it in the description.
Are these genuine old postcards, or modern reprints?
Every postcard in this collection is an original from the period it was printed, not a reproduction. Some are unposted and never went through the mail, while others carry a postmark and message from decades ago, but both are equally genuine vintage pieces.
Can I see the back of the postcard as well as the front?
Yes, every listing includes photos of both sides, so you can check for any postmark, message or stamp before you buy, as well as the picture itself.
How can you tell how old a Nottinghamshire postcard is?
If a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back will usually give you a date. Where it isn't legible, or there's no postmark at all, we look at details like the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.
Do you have postcards of a specific Nottinghamshire town, like Newark or Southwell?
This collection covers towns right across Nottinghamshire, from Newark and Nottingham to smaller places like Southwell and the Dukeries villages. You're also welcome to get in touch if you're after a specific place and can't see it listed, and we can let you know if we hold it in unlisted stock.
Is shipping free on Nottinghamshire postcards?
We offer free UK shipping on orders over £50 across the whole site. Orders under £50 are charged postage based on weight at checkout, and we ship internationally as well.
