The History Behind Our Ross & Cromarty Postcards

Eilean Donan Castle, on its island in Loch Duich, is the standout subject in this collection. The site was first fortified in the early 13th century to defend against Viking raiders, and the castle was demolished by government forces in 1719 following the Jacobite rising and the Battle of Glen Shiel. It lay in ruins for two centuries until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and began a 20-year restoration in 1912, completed in 1932, and it's now one of Scotland's most photographed castles.

Cromarty is another subject that recurs throughout this collection. It was the birthplace, in 1802, of Hugh Miller, a stonemason who went on to become a celebrated geologist after discovering ancient fossil fish on Cromarty beach in 1830. His thatched birthplace cottage still stands and is now a museum, and postcards of the town's harbour and streets remain popular with collectors.
