Lincolnshire postcards: Lincoln Cathedral, Skegness and the Fens

Lincoln Cathedral dominates this collection just as it dominated the skyline for centuries. When its spire was completed in 1311, the cathedral was reputedly the tallest structure in the world, a title it held for over two hundred years until the spire was blown down in a storm in 1548. It remains one of the great Gothic cathedrals of England, and our postcards show it from several angles and eras.

Skegness postcards owe a lot to the 'Skegness is SO Bracing' poster, created by artist John Hassall in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway. His Jolly Fisherman image became one of the most famous seaside adverts of all time and helped turn Skegness into a major holiday resort; our 1963 postcard of the pier and North Side Gardens shows the town well into that era.

Crowland's postcard shows the town's unique Trinity Bridge, a three-way stone bridge built by the monks of Crowland Abbey between 1360 and 1390. It originally crossed a junction of the River Welland and a tributary, but the rivers were rerouted in the 17th century, so the bridge has stood on dry land in the middle of the town ever since. You'll also find postcards of Sleaford, another of Lincolnshire's market towns, and new stock is added regularly if a particular place isn't here today.
