What's the Story Behind Our Warwickshire Postcards?

Warwick Castle is one of the most photographed subjects in this collection. William the Conqueror began it as a motte-and-bailey fortress in 1068, and it was rebuilt in stone through the 12th century, with the Beauchamp family later adding Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower in the 13th and 14th centuries. Postcards of the castle above the River Avon are a Warwickshire staple.

Stratford-upon-Avon is another big draw, thanks to Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street, the half-timbered house where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and grew up. Now a museum and a Grade I listed building, it's one of the most photographed literary landmarks in the country, and postcards of the house and the town's riverside appear throughout this collection.

Postcards from other Warwickshire towns, including Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, Rugby and Nuneaton, appear here too, and we add new stock from time to time.

FAQs

How old is Warwick Castle?
Warwick Castle dates back to 1068, when William the Conqueror had it built as a motte-and-bailey fortress. It was rebuilt in stone from the 12th century onwards, with towers such as Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower added by the Beauchamp family in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Was Shakespeare really born in the house on Henley Street?
Yes, Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, is where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and spent his childhood. It's now a museum and has been a Grade I listed building since 1951.

What period are these Warwickshire postcards from?
Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Do your Warwickshire postcards cover towns beyond Warwick and Stratford?
Yes, postcards from other Warwickshire towns such as Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, Rugby and Nuneaton appear across the collection, and we add new stock from time to time.

What condition are the postcards in?
We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing, corner wear, or toning, and condition can vary from postcard to postcard.

How can I date an old Warwickshire postcard?
A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?
Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?
Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?
Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
