Selkirkshire Postcards: Newark Castle and Sir Walter Scott

Newark Castle is one of the most striking subjects in this collection, a five-storey tower house built from 1423 by Archibald Douglas, Earl of Wigtown, above the Yarrow Water near Bowhill. In September 1645, following the Royalist defeat at the nearby Battle of Philiphaugh, over 100 prisoners from the Marquis of Montrose's army were executed in the castle's grounds by Covenanter forces under Sir David Leslie.

Sir Walter Scott is another figure closely tied to this collection. He served as Sheriff of Selkirkshire from 1799 until his death in 1832, dispensing justice for nearly 30 years from the courthouse built in 1804 on Selkirk's Market Place. That building still stands today, preserved as a museum to his life as both novelist and sheriff.
