What's the Story Behind Our Peeblesshire Postcards?

Neidpath Castle, above the River Tweed near Peebles, is a regular subject in this collection. Built in the late 14th century by the Hay family, it was attacked during Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1650, with accounts differing on whether it fell quickly or endured one of the longest sieges of any stronghold south of the River Forth. It was later remodelled by the 2nd Earl of Tweeddale in the 1660s.

Traquair House is another Peeblesshire landmark that recurs throughout this collection. It's the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, lived in for over 900 years, and began as a royal hunting lodge before passing to the Stuart family in 1491. It's best known for its Bear Gates, closed by the 5th Earl of Traquair in 1745 after Bonnie Prince Charlie's visit, with a vow that they would stay shut until a Stuart king reclaimed the throne, and they remain locked to this day.
