What's the Story Behind Our Berkshire Postcards?

Windsor Castle is the star of our Berkshire postcards, and rightly so. It is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, begun by William the Conqueror around 1070 and still a working royal residence nearly a thousand years later. Nearby Eton College, founded by Henry VI in 1440, appears often too, its playing fields and chapel a familiar sight on postcards sent home by pupils and visitors alike.

Reading Abbey is another regular subject, founded by Henry I in 1121 and said to be his final resting place, sewn into a bull's hide after his death in 1136. Maidenhead's railway bridge, completed in 1838 to Brunel's design and later painted by Turner in Rain, Steam and Speed, features on several cards, as does Ascot, whose racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711.

Other Berkshire towns and villages feature here too, and we keep adding new postcards as stock allows.

FAQs

How old is Windsor Castle?
Windsor Castle was begun by William the Conqueror around 1070, making it close to a thousand years old, and it's the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world.

Is Eton College still a working school?
Yes, Eton College has operated continuously since Henry VI founded it in 1440, and it remains a working school today, just across the Thames from Windsor.

How do you work out the age of an old Berkshire postcard?
If a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back usually gives a date. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

What condition are the postcards in?
We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing or corner wear, and condition varies from postcard to postcard.

Do you sell both used and unused postcards?
Yes, this collection includes both. Each listing shows whether that particular postcard has been posted or not.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?
Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Can I combine postage across several postcards?
Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

Will the photo show the exact postcard I receive?
Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.

What's the story behind Reading Abbey?
Henry I founded Reading Abbey in 1121 and was buried there after his death in 1135, making it one of the most important royal abbeys in medieval England before its dissolution under Henry VIII.

Do you ship Berkshire postcards internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide, with postage costs and delivery estimates shown at checkout.
