What's the Story Behind Our Dumfries & Galloway Postcards?

Sweetheart Abbey, near New Abbey, is one of the region's most photographed ruins. Lady Dervorguilla founded it in 1273 in memory of her husband John Balliol, and for the rest of her life she carried his embalmed heart with her in a silver and ivory casket, before being buried with it before the abbey's high altar in 1289. The monks named it Dulce Cor, Latin for Sweetheart, in her honour, and the name has stuck ever since.

Robert Burns House in Dumfries is another landmark that recurs throughout this collection. Burns lived there with his family from 1793 until his death in 1796, and the room where he died has welcomed visitors, including Wordsworth and Coleridge, since shortly after his death. It's been open to the public as a museum since 1903.
