Militaria for sale: naval postcards, cap badges and medals

Militaria covers the everyday things that came out of military life: the badges and buttons off a uniform, the medals awarded for service, and the postcards sent home.

What holds it together is that every piece belonged to somebody. A medal was pinned on one man, a badge sat on the front of his cap, a postcard was posted home in his own handwriting. Most people come to militaria through a relative who served, and end up researching the person behind the piece as much as collecting it.

Naval postcards make up a large part of what we stock. In the years before the First World War, warships were public news, and photographs of battleships and cruisers were printed as postcards and sold in huge numbers. Plenty of the ships pictured were lost within a few years of the photograph being taken, which is part of the appeal.

Cap badges and uniform buttons are usually collected by regiment. British regiments were amalgamated and renamed a good deal over the last century, so a badge is sometimes the clearest trace left of a unit that no longer exists.

Medals are worth a closer look. British campaign medals are normally named around the rim with the number, rank, name and regiment of the man who received them, which means you can often trace him.

New militaria is added regularly, so it is worth checking back if you do not spot what you are after straight away.

FAQs

What counts as militaria?

Militaria is a broad term for objects connected with military service. It covers cap badges, uniform buttons, medals and insignia, naval and military postcards, and paper items such as documents and photographs. We do not sell weapons or ammunition.

What sort of militaria do you stock?

Mainly British pieces, running from the Victorian era through to the middle of the last century. Naval and military postcards make up the largest part, alongside regimental cap badges, uniform buttons and service medals, with the occasional foreign item as well.

Are the badges and medals you sell original?

Yes, everything listed is an original period item rather than a reproduction. Cap badges have been widely copied over the years, so if you want to know more about a particular piece before buying, message us and we will tell you what we know about it.

Can I find out who a medal was awarded to?

In a lot of cases, yes. British campaign medals are usually named around the rim with the service number, rank, name and regiment of the recipient, and that is enough to start looking through service records and regimental histories. Where a medal is named, the naming is shown in the listing photos.

What condition is your militaria in?

We photograph each item closely so you can see the condition for yourself. These pieces have been worn, handled and stored for decades, so some wear is normal and it varies from item to item. Anything that does not show clearly in the photos is noted in the listing.

How old are the military postcards?

Most were printed between the early 1900s and the 1940s. Some carry a postmark on the back showing the date they were posted, and where that date is known we note it in the listing.

Do you have anything from a particular ship or regiment?

Try the search box on this page with the ship or regiment name. What we hold changes as items sell and new pieces come in, so if nothing comes up today it is worth looking again another time.

How is militaria packaged for posting?

Postcards and paper items go into a protective sleeve and a hardback envelope so they cannot bend on the way. Badges, buttons and medals are wrapped and padded so nothing moves in the post. Postage is combined across everything you order at the same time.

Do you post militaria overseas?

Yes, we ship worldwide. UK delivery is free on orders over £50, and international postage is calculated at checkout based on the destination and the weight of the parcel.
