Brooches have had a real resurgence lately, seen on runways from Ralph Lauren to Giorgio Armani, and they're an easy way to add character to an outfit, whether pinned to a lapel, scarf or knit, or worn as a pendant on a chain. Victorian and Edwardian pieces are especially in demand right now, particularly naturalistic and sentimental designs, which happens to be a strength here.
Scottish brooches make up a large part of what we stock, particularly thistle designs, since the thistle is Scotland's national emblem. Many feature Scottish agate, which became especially fashionable in the Victorian era, partly thanks to Queen Victoria's own fondness for the Cairngorms and Balmoral. You'll also find Celtic designs, kilt pins and pieces in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a design thread that continues through our earrings.
Several of our brooches carry extra sentimental or symbolic meaning. Horseshoe brooches, a traditional symbol of good luck, and Mizpah brooches, which take their name from a Hebrew word meaning "watchtower" and were exchanged as a token of love and protection between people facing separation, are two Victorian favourites you'll find here. We also carry sweetheart brooches, including military designs and the occasional piece made from genuine threepence coins, along with the occasional bar brooch, a simple, elongated style that was especially popular from the 1890s through the Edwardian period.
