What's the Story Behind Our Essex Postcards?

Essex postcards for sale cover a lot of ground, from the seafronts of Southend-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea to quieter market towns such as Maldon and Halstead. Southend Pier, extended to its current 1.34 miles in 1929, is the longest pleasure pier in the world, and postcards of it span Edwardian bandstands and promenades through to the pier's later heyday as a day-trip destination.

Waltham Abbey's postcards draw on an older story: Harold Godwinson rebuilt the church there in the 1050s and, according to tradition, was buried before its altar after his death at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, though his grave has never been found. Dedham, on the Essex side of the River Stour, sits across the water from Flatford Mill in Suffolk, the scene made famous in John Constable's The Hay Wain, and postcards of the Dedham Vale countryside capture the same landscape that inspired his paintings.

Colchester, Chelmsford, Saffron Walden and other Essex towns and villages are pictured here too, with fresh postcards added as we find them.

FAQs

What time period do your Essex postcards come from?

Most of our Essex postcards date from the early 1900s through to the mid 20th century, including several seaside views from the 1960s and 70s. You'll see a real mix, from black and white Edwardian scenes to brighter tinted colour postcards of later decades.

Are these original vintage postcards, not reproductions?

Every postcard in this collection is a genuine original, never a modern reprint. Most were produced and posted many decades ago, so what you're buying is a real artefact from the period rather than a copy of one.

Which Essex towns appear most in the collection?

Seaside spots like Southend-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea come up often, alongside market towns such as Maldon and Halstead. You'll also find views of Waltham Abbey and the Dedham Vale countryside on the Essex side of the Stour, close to the Suffolk scenes made famous by John Constable.

Do any of the postcards have handwriting or postmarks on them?

A number of our postcards have been through the post and carry a message, stamp or postmark on the back, while others were never sent and remain blank. Every listing includes photos of the front and reverse, so there are no surprises when it arrives.

What does "topographical postcard" mean?

A topographical postcard is one that shows a real place, such as a street, building or landscape, rather than a greetings card design or illustration. Our Essex postcards are a good example, capturing genuine views of seaside promenades, town centres and countryside as they looked at the time.

Are your Essex postcards real photographic or printed postcards?

We stock both. Real photographic postcards were printed directly from a negative and tend to have a sharper, more detailed image, while printed postcards were produced in bulk using standard printing methods. We note which type each postcard is in its listing, so you'll always know what you're buying.

How can I check the condition of a postcard before buying?

Every postcard is photographed on both sides, letting you check for creasing, wear or marks yourself before ordering. If you want a closer look at any particular detail, just message us and we'll help.

Do you ship these postcards internationally?

Yes, we send postcards to customers all over the world. You'll see the exact shipping cost and estimated delivery time at checkout once you've entered your location.

Do you have postcards of a specific Essex location I'm after?

We add new stock regularly, so if you don't see the exact view of Essex you're after today, it's worth checking back or getting in touch and we can let you know if something similar comes in.
