What's the Story Behind Our Aberdeenshire Postcards?

Balmoral Castle is one of the most recognisable subjects in this collection. Prince Albert bought the estate for Queen Victoria in 1852, and the present castle, designed by William Smith of Aberdeen, was completed in 1856. It remains the private property of the monarch rather than the Crown Estate, and has stayed the Royal Family's Highland home ever since.

Dunnottar Castle, perched dramatically on a cliff above the North Sea, has its own remarkable story. During the 1650s, the Honours of Scotland, the country's crown jewels, were smuggled here for safekeeping from Oliver Cromwell's besieging army, then lowered down the cliff face and hidden under the floor of nearby Kinneff Church for almost a decade. Postcards of the ruins remain a popular Aberdeenshire subject.
