Argyll & Bute Postcards: Inveraray Castle and Iona Abbey

Inveraray Castle has been the seat of Clan Campbell since Sir Duncan Campbell moved the family base here in 1450, and it later became home to the Earls, then Dukes, of Argyll. The castle seen in most postcards dates largely from a rebuild after an 1877 fire, which added a third floor and the distinctive conical-roofed towers that give it its fairy tale appearance today.

Iona, off the coast of Mull, is another subject that recurs throughout this collection. St Columba and twelve companions founded Iona Abbey there in 563 AD, and it grew into one of the most influential centres of early Christianity in Britain. Postcards of the abbey and the island's beaches remain popular with collectors of Scottish views.

Postcards from Oban, Dunoon, Campbeltown and other towns around Argyll & Bute appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

How long has Inveraray Castle been the Campbell family seat?
Clan Campbell moved its base to Inveraray in 1450 under Sir Duncan Campbell, and the site has remained the seat of the Earls, then Dukes, of Argyll ever since. The castle's current appearance largely dates from a rebuild after an 1877 fire.

Why is Iona significant in Scottish history?
St Columba founded Iona Abbey in 563 AD, and it became one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Britain, often described as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland.

What period are these Argyll & Bute postcards from?
Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Do your Argyll & Bute postcards cover towns beyond Inveraray and Iona?
Yes, postcards from Oban, Dunoon, Campbeltown and other towns around Argyll & Bute appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What condition are the postcards in?
We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing, corner wear, or toning, and condition can vary from postcard to postcard.

How can I date an old Argyll & Bute postcard?
A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?
Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?
Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?
Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
