Suffolk Postcards: From Sutton Hoo to Bury St Edmunds

Sutton Hoo is one of Suffolk's most remarkable subjects for postcards. In 1939, amateur archaeologist Basil Brown uncovered a 27-metre Anglo-Saxon ship burial there for landowner Edith Pretty, complete with an ornate iron helmet and treasures now held at the British Museum. The burial is thought to date from around 620-625 AD and is often linked to Raedwald, King of East Anglia.

Lavenham is another Suffolk town that recurs often in this collection. Granted a market charter in 1257, it grew wealthy on the wool and cloth trade, becoming, by Tudor times, one of the richest towns in England for its size. Over 300 of its timber-framed buildings survive today, including the 15th-century Guild Hall built by the Guild of Corpus Christi, and postcards of its crooked streets remain popular.

Postcards from other Suffolk towns, including Bury St Edmunds, Aldeburgh and Woodbridge, appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

What was found at Sutton Hoo?

In 1939, Basil Brown uncovered a 27-metre Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo, filled with treasures including an iconic iron helmet, thought to belong to Raedwald, King of East Anglia, and dating from around 620-625 AD.

Why is Lavenham known as a wool town?

Lavenham grew rich on the wool and cloth trade from the 14th century onwards, particularly its blue woad-dyed broadcloth, and was said to be one of the wealthiest towns in England by Tudor times. Its wealth left it with over 300 surviving timber-framed buildings.

What period are these Suffolk postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Do your Suffolk postcards cover towns beyond Sutton Hoo and Lavenham?

Yes, postcards from other Suffolk towns such as Bury St Edmunds, Aldeburgh and Woodbridge appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What condition are the postcards in?

We photograph each postcard closely so you can see its actual condition before you buy. Due to their age, some general wear is normal, such as light creasing, corner wear, or toning, and condition can vary from postcard to postcard.

How can I date an old Suffolk postcard?

A postmark is the clearest clue on a posted card. Where there isn't one, we look at the printing style, the stamp box design and the publisher's mark to estimate an approximate era.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
