Surrey Postcards: Guildford Castle and Epsom Downs

Guildford Castle features often in this collection. Built soon after the Norman Conquest of 1066 as a motte-and-bailey fortress, it was rebuilt in stone through the 12th century, and by the reign of Henry III it had grown grand enough to be called a palace. Postcards show its surviving keep, standing around 70 feet tall above the town.

Epsom Downs Racecourse is another well-known Surrey subject, home to the Derby since its first running in 1780, won by a horse named Diomed. The race's name was settled by a coin toss between the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury, and it went on to inspire similar races worldwide, including the Kentucky Derby. Postcards of race day crowds on the Downs are a familiar sight in this collection.
