North America stretches from the Arctic down to the tropics, taking in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, and this collection reflects that range, from natural wonders to modern landmarks.
Niagara Falls is the standout subject in this collection. It formed more than 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age, as meltwater carved back through the rock layers of the Niagara Escarpment to reach its present position. The falls straddle the border between Ontario, Canada and New York State, and the largest of its three waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls, spans the international boundary itself.
The Statue of Liberty is another landmark that recurs throughout this collection. French abolitionist Edouard de Laboulaye proposed the idea in 1865 to mark the centennial of American independence. Sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, with an internal framework by Gustave Eiffel, and it was shipped from France in 350 pieces before being dedicated in New York Harbour on 28 October 1886.
