What's the Story Behind Our Europe Postcards?

Europe's postcards in this collection range across the continent's many countries, taking in ancient ruins, grand architecture and the everyday life of towns and cities from western Europe to the Mediterranean.

The Eiffel Tower is the standout subject in this collection. The engineer Gustave Eiffel's design was chosen from 107 entries for a tower to mark the 1889 Exposition Universelle, celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. Built in just over two years, it opened on 31 March 1889 as the tallest structure in the world at the time, a title it held until New York's Chrysler Building in 1930.

The Colosseum in Rome is another landmark that recurs throughout this collection. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian, and it was completed and dedicated by his son Titus in AD 80 with a festival of 100 days of games, though the amphitheatre's upper levels weren't finished until later under Domitian. Originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre, it remains one of the most recognisable ancient monuments in the world.

Postcards from Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

FAQs

Why was the Eiffel Tower built?

Gustave Eiffel's design was chosen from 107 entries for a tower to mark the 1889 Exposition Universelle, celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. It opened on 31 March 1889 as the tallest structure in the world at the time.

How long did the Colosseum take to build?

Construction began under Emperor Vespasian and was completed by his son Titus, who dedicated it in AD 80 with 100 days of games, though its upper levels weren't finished until later under Domitian.

Was the Eiffel Tower always meant to be permanent?

It was originally built as a temporary structure for the 1889 exhibition, but its popularity and usefulness as a radio transmission tower saved it from demolition, and it has remained a permanent Paris landmark ever since.

Do your Europe postcards cover countries beyond France and Italy?

Yes, postcards from Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What period are these Europe postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Are these real photographic postcards or printed ones?

We stock both. Real photographic postcards (often abbreviated RPPC) were printed directly from a negative onto photographic paper, giving a sharper image, while printed postcards were produced using traditional lithographic methods. We note which type each postcard is in its listing.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
