What's the Story Behind Our Asia Postcards?

Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, spanning ancient empires and centuries-old religious sites through to fast-modernising cities, and this collection reflects that diversity across many different countries.

The Taj Mahal is the standout subject in this collection. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the mausoleum in Agra following the death of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in childbirth in 1631. Construction began around 1632, with the main building completed by about 1638-39, and the wider 42-acre complex finished by 1643. It's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and is widely regarded as the finest example of Mughal architecture.

The Great Wall of China is another landmark that recurs throughout this collection. Fortifications along China's northern frontier date back over 2,700 years, joined into a continuous wall under the Qin Dynasty from 221 BC. The best-preserved sections seen by visitors today were built during the Ming Dynasty from the 14th century, a project that took over 200 years and stretched some 8,850 kilometres.

Postcards from Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka appear in this collection too, and we add new stock regularly.

Do your Asia postcards cover countries beyond India and China?

Yes, postcards from Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka appear across the collection, and we add new stock regularly.

What period are these Asia postcards from?

Most date from the early to mid-1900s, though this varies by item. Where a postcard has been posted, the postmark on the back can help pinpoint an exact date, and we note this in the listing where we know it.

Are these real photographic postcards or printed ones?

We stock both. Real photographic postcards (often abbreviated RPPC) were printed directly from a negative onto photographic paper, giving a sharper image, while printed postcards were produced using traditional lithographic methods. We note which type each postcard is in its listing.

Do you combine postage if I order more than one postcard?

Yes, we combine postage across all items on our store. We post worldwide, and UK orders of £50 and over qualify for free shipping.

How are the postcards packaged when posted?

Each postcard is placed within a protective sleeve and posted in a hardback envelope, to keep it protected in transit.

Is the postcard photo the actual item I'll receive?

Yes, every photo shows the exact postcard you'll receive, not a generic or stock image.
